I love this Club; even if it’s a Men’s Club!
I have a theory when it comes to menswear. Men’s clothing will change with the times but it won’t ever transform quite like women’s fashions.
This makes it’s harder for men’s designers to create clothing articles that stay current yet maintain the timeless bravado that a man needs in his wardrobe.
The items in the May Five Four Club subscription box were impressive indeed. Five Four Club is quickly proving to be an expert when it comes to ensuring menswear covers the bases from practicality to current trends.
When reviewing a menswear box I think my input is critical. Because although the items aren’t specifically for me…unfortunately for the men in my life, what they wear can have a noticeable impact on how I will treat them while in said clothing.
For example, when my husband wears this one button down shirt that I think is “see through” it drives me nuts. I don’t say anything (anymore) but I still get that feeling of “good lord old man…why do you think people need to all that sexay’ness?” (or more commonly known as middle aged belly and man boobs).
So my point here…what the man is wearing will have some direct consequences in the form of how I will treat him. I was obviously absent for lesson plan “it’s not all about me.”
So anywhoooo – the clothes that are being worn by any man in my family have to fit into some certain criteria to ensure a smooth interaction between us.
Five Four Club – thanks for helping me refrain from being mean to my husband.
May’s box kept it classy and kept is cool.
First up in our curated menswear from Five Four Club – The Trent Hoodie.
It’s a classic hoodie that all men should have as a staple.
Two colors every man should own in his wardrobe, navy blue and gray! And when they are together…even better! The hood, sleeves, and pockets are navy and the main body is gray.
The weight of this hoodie is on point; not too heavy and not too thin allowing for the ultimate hang capability when on.
The Harbor Tee is super cool.
It’s an off-white tee with faded navy blue stripes.
After closer inspection though I was totally blown away by how the tee got its stripes. The faded navy stripe is actually the bleed through from solid printed stripes on the inside of the tee. It’s really very cool, I’ve never seen anything like it before.
I’ll be interested to see what happens upon a wash or two. Will the blue fade?
The Hypothesis – if the blue stripes were on the outside and the blue began to fade or peel…shirt would look battered, right? But with this design and contstruction any fading or stripping of color that happens will just contribute to the look of the stonewashed navy stripes.
It’s Genius…if the navy stripes fade on the inside I fully expect the tee will maintain the distressed/faded stripe look on the outside.
To complete their blue themed May box we have The Boxwood Blu Shirt.
Now, this is a great looking short sleeve shirt. The deep navy color is rich and vibrant.
However, at initial shake down, I had one concern with this shirt. It’s a wee bit transparent and since we know my husband on occasion has chosen to wear items that provide a little sneeky-peek into all his sexay’ness under those shirts of his…it gave me a tinge of fright.
Not to fear fellow opaque shirt lovers; this shirt can have a basic white tee underneath.
I’m quite prepared for his push back and snark as if I have no clue as to how it should be worn.
The husband tends to assume by simple nationality my sense of fashion is antiquated. Conversely – because he is European he’s cornered the market on “what’s up and coming” in fashion land. Like it’s in his DNA.
My strategy…I simply tell him the experts who created the shirt said it is meant to be worn with a white tee under it. Hold your applause…it took years to perfect my trickeries.
But just to be clear, I totally concur that Europe is certainly a trend setting mecca often with the edge on trends. But…darling husband – we are in America and I don’t care how fashion forward you think those see through shirts are…if they haven’t hit America yet you will not be the one to introduce us to them. Capish?
So Society, there we have it – the Five Four Club menswear subscription has delivered a custom curated May box full of men’s clothing items that are sure to impress the masses. In my antiquated American fashion opinion, these are classic items that can be worn with very low probability of becoming yesterday’s hot mess.
