Last month I was bit disappointed (or let down) with my March Birchbox. If you’d like to read it, you can check it out here.
April’s Birchbox theme: “It’s what on the inside that matters.” I thought it was really clever that the box design was on the inside. Cute right? Pretty ingenious and creative in my opinion.
So let’s see if they delivered to that theme with the products that were on the inside.
I’ll start with the product I was wanting to get a sample of, the Dr. Jart+ Cicapair Tiger Grass cream.
I’d heard of this product maybe a year or so ago. Full disclosure – I’m a skin picker. I probably should have found a support group for this many times before, but the picking just gives me some sort of outlet for…oh who knows?
Latest Challenge with my bad habit– my younger skin healed pretty quick, but as I get older it takes longer for these poor wounds to heal and disappear; if they even disappear at all anymore.
Enter Tiger Grass. Legend has it that the secret ingredient in this centella asiatica is a healing balm from some botanical wonder, that’s found in specific regions of the World. Asian Tigers after a battle in their lands roll around in this grass and it would heal their battle wounds.
Whatchoo talkin bout Willis??? Sign me up! I’m banking on there’s little probability that I could possibly do any worse to my skin than tigers do to each other during a battle in the jungle. I’m holding on tight to this little nugget of hope.
The reason I hadn’t purchased it before is well, it’s not cheap. I just wasn’t confident enough that it would have miraculous tiger wound healing properties. In my most recent quest to afford college for 3 kids, I’m attempting less careless spending habits. Cicapair retails for $48, which it totally worth it if it works. But historically that isn’t the case; I have way too many products that still sit in my drawers because they never worked. I keep them there as reminders of my “too quick to buy instinct”
Well now, Birch Box has offered me an opportunity to try the product all the while maintaining my conscientious spending habits. Win! I have been using it as a spot treatment on my poor little picked spots. I’m hoping this will incite tiger magic and I’ll be eternally grateful to BB for uniting us.
Next up in the April Birchbox were the (cue drumroll) haaaiiir products. This is where it gets annoying. I don’t want hair products. And again I received 3 products. Kind of annoying and I haven’t quite figured out the motive behind the push of hair products.
But I must confess last month’s box (March) I did end up trying the hair products and I was actually impressed by the N 4 products. Buuut, I will should mentions its quite likely that came from my insatiable passion for nice smelling things. It smells so fantastic.
First was the N 4 Jour d’automne Smoothig Balm. I’m pretty sure that translates to something resembling “fine fall day”. The balm is meant to tame frizz so I’m not sure I get the correlation.
As I whined about in last month’s review – I don’t have frizzy hair, necessarily. Birchbox, please please, read my profile answers.
Additionally in the box is the Love Shampoo and Conditioner by Davines; uhhh for smoothing hair. Hmmm, ok the smoothing thing again. I will say though that it does smell lovely. YAY!
On the subject of hair products – truth be told, shampoo & conditioner just aren’t the type of thing that excite me that much so it’s highly unlikely I would end up buying from samples any full size.
And because my kids tend to be wasteful little shampooers, I don’t usually buy expensive shampoo and conditioner because it simply makes no sense in my new fiscally conscious life goals. Have I mentioned how much I f*ing hate fiscal consciousness?
Important Note: for those who have hair textures that require more specialized products – this would be a fantastic subscription box for you to try out. Because they definitely are heavy on the hair products samples. I’m confident Birchbox would be excellent for those scenarios.
I was excited about the next product because I’m always looking for my next favorite lip love- Love Shampoo and Conditioner by Davines. The collection is in their GRLWPWR line of matte lips. The color in my Birchbox was Imma Bawse (love that name) and it’s no joke, it wears like a bawse!
Holy Shit…you aren’t getting this off easily. If you’re looking for a long lasting lip color, this baby is your new best friend. If you have dry lips, please be ready to be applying some sort of balm on top throughout the day. My daughter put a little test stripe of it on her hand and it’s still slightly there 24 hours + 1 shower later.
The color wasn’t my favorite, but I could totally see myself using this in another color.
I checked out the site to see what other colors were available, but unfortunately, none tickled my fancy. With that being said, I would encourage you to look and see if there is a color you would like…because this offers the real deal as it relates to staying power.
Finally, sound the horns and alert the confetti guns…this one is a winner for me! Marcelle BB Cream Golden Glow. I am a big BB cream fan. It works perfectly for my skin that tends to maintain an oily shine consistently throughout the day.
I have a favorite BB cream that I’ve been very loyal to throughout the last couple of years…and this is the first one that has made me take pause and wonder…could I stray?
At first, it goes on with a slightly concerning tinge. I thought for sure would it be the death of any relationship between me and Marcelle, in this lifetime. But nooooo…it totally adjusted and ended up blending really well. It slowly dissipates its tinge into matching my skin tone and it sets to a nice matte finish. It blended out my skin discolorations beautifully.
It did seem to cake up a bit on my crusty areas, but enter my Cicapair Tiger Grass cream and maybe they are a meant-to-be duo that just needed to activate their twin power in the shape of a perfect concealer.
At the end of my unboxing the main takeaway in my mind was that this may be a subscription box better suited to a teen/tween. The variety of samples for only $10.00 a month is quite reasonable. However, I’m at the age where all these sample sizes are really probably not going to include the holy grail product that will change my life forever.
I think that for a younger audience this is a great subscription. For those who love to experiment and play with new colors and products, Birch Box is a fantastic option.
